The city of Montreal is preparing for a rush of owners of pitbulls or pitbull-type dogs who need to get special permits now that the city's pitbull ban is now in effect.
A permit blitz will be underway starting Monday in most of the boroughs and lasting until December 22. It'll be a different borough each day and a block of time will be set aside that day.
The city said if you can't make it for a certain day or time in one borough, you can go to another borough for the special pitbull permit. The city also said if you live in one borough, but work in another, you can go to either borough for the permit.
The deadline so far to get the special permit is December 31 but city council may decide later this month to change that.
The Montreal SPCA said they "are receiving a lot of calls from people who are worried about the by-law and their dogs welfare. They said they are "asking them to contact the city since we also find the provisions dealing with 'pit bull type dogs' to be imprecise and vague."
The Quebec Court of Appeal yesterday overturned a lower court ruling to suspend the ban and there'll be a future court hearing on the merits of the bylaw.
