The iconic Pioneer bar in Pointe Claire village has been officially sold and opponents worry the sale signals an imminent demolition of the 117 year old bar.
Developer and architect Greg Koegl wants to build condo units on the site.
His original project to construct 15 condo units and four commercial units was rejected.
He's since scaled back the project to two and a half storeys, but the project still needs final approval from city hall.
“We're investing close to $15 million to do what we think is really needed in the community, which is to improve it,” he tells CTV Montreal.
There is fierce opposition to a condo project.
Opponents want to see the space remain a bar or other type of meeting place.
“It's a commercial village where people come to shop. It's not a residential place. It shouldn't be a residential place,” says Tim Thomas.
Council has until April to decide whether to approve Koegl's project.
A key to the development is the sale of the parking lot next door to the Pioneer.
Koegl has an agreement with the city to purchase it, but the sale hasn't been finalized.
The next council meeting is January 15 and opponents say they plan to be there to voice their concerns.
