A pilot project is about to begin in three Quebec regions involving English-speaking seniors.
The aim is to hook up volunteers and socially-isolated seniors to help them access needed services.
The project is run by Seniors Action Quebec.
"The federal government is contributing $150,000 over 2 years, $75,000 will come from other donors. Volunteers who are seniors themselves will make contact with seniors in need of support", reported CTV's Cindy Sherwin.
The regions, include Montreal neighborhoods, where black, English-speaking communities are located.
"There's a substantial English-speaking community that's quite dispersed so it's good for a demonstration to be operating in different environments," said Michael Udy of Seniors Action Quebec.
"I think the problem is that as people age and their bodies may not be as user friendly, it can be hard for them to get to activities," said Ann MacKay of the NDG Senior Citizens Council.
"Without getting to activities and having contact with other people in their peer groups, they’re not aware of what’s available."
