Outremont mayor Marie Cinq-Mars says she plans to step aside when her term expires next fall, saying it's time for a new generation of leadership to come forward.
"Outremont will, in the course of the next few years, be facing numerous challenges and will benefit from the experience and dedication of engaged and dynamic people," said Cinq-Mars.
She was first elected to Outremont's city council in 1999, and was re-elected to borough council in 2002.
She became borough mayor in a by-election 2007, after the resignation of Stephen Harbour.
Her time in office was marked by a couple of contentious issues: the imposition of restrictions on new places of worship, and the controversial renaming of Vimy Park after former premier Jacques Parizeau.
