The Ontario government will announce today that it will create a network of government-run retail outlets to sell marijuana when the drug becomes legal next next year.
The Globe and Mail reports that the government of Premier Kathleen Wynne will also allow marijuana to be sold online.
The current plan calls for 40 stores to open across the province initially, with more locations added over time.
The government plans to consult with municipal leaders before deciding where the first stores will be placed.
The Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO), the crown corporation that handles retail sales and distribution of alcoholic beverages in the province, is not expected to be involved in the process.
