The Canadian Taxpayers Federation has launched an online petition calling on Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante to go back to the drawing board.
The Federation says rather than cutting the fat, the Mayor broke her campaign promise to limit tax increases to the rate of inflation and now tax bills are up an average 3.3%, or 50% higher than inflation.
Residents of the City of Montreal are not the only ones who will have to dig deeper as a result of the Plante budget.
Agglomeration taxes which are paid by demerged cities for shared services will rise an average 5.3%.
In the Town of Mount Royal the increase amounts to almost 10%, in Montreal-West the agglomeration tax bill is up 9% and in Westmount the increase is 6.7%.
Businesswoman Rhona Massad, the creator of the West Island Blog, is organizing a demonstration against the tax increase in Pointe-Claire this weekend.
