Verdun officials are warning residents in some areas to keep a watchful eye on their pets and children after several containers laced with what is believed to be rat poison were found in some alleyways.
In a letter sent out last week, the borough said cans were recently found between Woodland St. and 1st Ave. as well as between Verdun St. and Wellington.
The cans are similar to the ones found in alleys near 3rd and 4th Aves. last April.
The first animal to get sick from the poison appears to have been a dachshund named Gaston about two weeks ago. After several blood transfusions the dog's condition improved.
There have been about half a dozen other cases of animals falling ill, all believed to be linked to poisoned food either tossed into someone's yard or left in an alley.
At least two cats have died.
Borough officials want to remind everyone it is forbidden to feed wild or stray animals anywhere in the city of Montreal; it is also illegal to poison animals. Anyone found guilty could be sentenced to five years in prison.
Anyone with information is being asked to call the inspectors handling the case, either through the City of Montreal website or via the 3-1-1 information hotline.
All calls will be handled confidentiality.
