Norene Gilletz, the cookbook author and food blogger known as Canada's answer to Julia Child, died in Montreal on Sunday at the age of 79.
Gilletz was a Montrealer who wrote a dozen cookbooks, the best-known of which was her 1968 book Second Helpings, Please, which became a staple in Jewish homes for decades, particularly the homes of newly married couples.
"There's hardly a Jewish home without a Norene Gilletz cookbook," columnist and blogger Mike Cohen told CJAD 800. "[Gilletz] was a legendary cookbook author who was synonymous with recipes for people starting out cooking for the very first time, and then onwards, for decades."
Over the years, she became a teacher, food writer and spokesperson. Her last book, The Brain Boosting Diet: Feed Your Memory was published last December.
Funeral services will be held later this week at Montreal's Paperman & Sons.
