Carole Thomas, who pleaded guilty to making up a story about being sexually assaulted in Longueuil two years ago, will not have to go to jail.
Thomas was handed a 15-month jail sentence to be served in the community. She'll essentially be under house arrest, and will have to abide by a dusk-to-dawn curfew. Then, she'll be on probation for two years.
Back in February 2015, Thomas went public with a claim that she had been sexually assaulted on a bike path in Longueuil, just two days before 23-year-old Jenique Dalcourt was found dead not far away.
Then, she criticized Longueuil police in general, and one officer, Sgt.-Det. David Lelièvre in particular, for failing to take her claim seriously.
As it turned out, police did check out the story, and through her cellphone records, they discovered she was at her former home in TMR, and not on that bike path, when the assault was supposed to have happened.
The Longueuil police union has planned to sue Thomas for defamation, and then withdrew their suit after she wrote a letter of apology.
