The days are literally numbered for Montreal's iconic MR-63 metro cars.
The cars have been in service since the metro system opened in 1966. On June 21, the familiar screeches and hisses of the original cars will be gone from the metro system for good.
Starting in early 2016, the original metro cars were taken out of service, one by one, as the brand new Azur metro cars were phased in.
A few of the MR-63s can be found on the metro's Green Line, but now that the phase-in period for the Azurs is just about complete, the STM has announced there'll be one final spin for the last of the cars on each of the four metro lines, during the morning and evening rush hours, starting on June 18.
They'll run on the Yellow Line on June 18, the Green on the June 19, the Orange on June 20 and the Blue on June 21.
Each of the MR-63 cars has travelled more than four million kilometres since 1966 — the equivalent of five round trips to the moon.
