The Plante administration is considering a significant change to the Ste. Catherine St. revitalization program.
Under a plan expected to be unveiled next month, the sidewalks along the street would be widened from four metres to seven, effectively narrowing the street down to a single lane, without parking on either side.
Some business owners are already expressing their concerns, with one telling CTV Montreal he would have to shut down his sports memorabilia shop if the plan were to go through.
Supporters of the idea say it would make the street more pedestrian-friendly, with fewer cars and less pollution.
The Plante administration has come under intense fire since it introduced another proposal aimed at cutting car use on Montreal's streets — the pilot project which would ban cars from going from one end of Mount Royal to the other. More than 25,000 people have signed a Change.org petition against the project.
