On Monday the Montreal police department officially activated one new photo radar van, along with two photo radar trailers.
The goal is to have sections of busy streets and several school zones under surveillance, but not the constant kind.
Because the new units are all mobile, police will decide each day where to set them up.
Warning signs will be posted in the area whenever the photo radar is active.
This week, the area near four schools has been targeted.
They are:
St. Laurent high school, 2395 Thimens Blvd., St. Laurent
Marc Laflamme school, 555 19th Ave., RDP
Lucien Pagé high school, 8200 St. Laurent Blvd., Park Extension
Christ Roi elementary school, 525 Louvain Rd., Ahuntsic.
More cameras are coming.
By the end of next week, more mobile devices will be popping up, keeping an eye on 40 kilometres of Montreal's busiest streets.
They include:
Sherbrooke St. from Pie IX to Trianon St.
Pie IX Blvd. from Notre Dame to Henri Bourassa Blvd.
St. Michel Blvd. from Saint Joseph Blvd. to Henri Bourassa Blvd.
Christophe Colomb Ave. from Rosemont Blvd. to Cremazie Blvd.
René Levesque Blvd. from Hope Ave. to Papineau Ave.
