Hopefully long lineups to clear customs at Trudeau Airport will be a thing of the past.
The airport authority and Canada Border Services Agency unveiled a series of measures this morning to accelerate border clearance processes at the airport.
There's a new connections centre, more automated kiosks and inspection lines, more airport and border workers during specific hours, and a new sign posting wait times.
This fall, they'll be putting in new and more powerful automated kiosks that will check travel documents, enable you to complete your declaration form on the screen and have your identity confirmed through facial recognition. You'll also be able to use a new mobile app to go through the process.
Airport and border officials say most travellers - over 90% of those entering Canada through Trudeau Airport – wait less than 20 minutes at the main checkpoint. But they say that time can go up during peak periods and bad weather.
Last year, travellers reported very long lineups to clear customs mainly because of flights arriving all at once and only a few border employees working.
