A mural honouring legendary Montreal music teacher Daisy Peterson Sweeney was officially unveiled Tuesday in Little Burgundy.
The painting on the side of a building on St. Jacques St. is four stories high, and shows Peterson Sweeney gently smiling in front of her piano and sheets of music. The mural is down the street from one honouring her brother, Montreal-born jazz giant Oscar Peterson.
"I think it was a wonderful, wonderful idea," says Oliver Jones, another one of Peterson Sweeney's students who went on to jazz fame. "I'm very, very happy that she's being admired and honoured now."
Peterson Sweeney died on Aug. 11, 2017 at the age of 97. Shortly after her death, then-mayor Denis Coderre promised to have a street named after her. However, the Plante administration initially reneged on the promise, proposing to rename a small park instead — an idea rejected by her family. Current plans are to have a park and part of a street named after her.
The mural was created by Kevin Ledo, who's also behind the Leonard Cohen mural in the Plateau.
