With legalization now only months away, there is a new war on drugs coming: the war for the profits from retail marijuana sales.
Cities are looking to get a slice of the pie. The new head of Quebec's union of municipalities says it`s only fair the local governments get a third of tax revenues from cannabis sales.
Alexandre Cusson says he and other mayors expect their municipalities will be assuming a lot of the costs tied to legal marijuana sales.
Cusson, who is also mayor of Drummondville, estimates it will cost $10,000 per local police officer for new training.
Montreal Mayor Valerie Plante has said training for local police is imperative.
Representatives of the municipal umbrella organization will be speaking before a committee at the National Assembly on the matter next week.
