Montreal police say that being run over by a car in Saint-Laurent earlier today, a 44-year-old mother has died in hospital. Her 5-year-old son remains in critical condition.
The two were hit while walking in a parking lot in the borough on Côte-Vertu and Montpellier at around 11:30 this morning. Firefighters had to lift the wrecked car to retrieve the victims.
The 90-year-old man driving the car was not injured. He told investigators that the car was accelerating on its own. Police spokesman Jean-Pierre Brabant says that the investigation is still not finished, and that mechanical experts are onsite trying to determine if the crash was caused by a defect in the car.
