The Plante administration has officially welcomed to city hall its first commissioner of indigenous affairs.
Marie-Ève Bordeleau gave a speech during a ceremony that included Assembly of First Nations Chief Ghislain Picard and Quebec Minister of Native Affairs Geoff Kelley.
Bordeleau is a lawyer and member of the Cree nation who took part in the negotiations linked to the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement.
Bordeleau said she wants to help build bridges between the city and its indigenous communities - Montreal is home to the largest number of first nations and indigenous people in the province.
Bordeleau said that will mean consulting them.
"In order to see and understand what has to be done," Bordeleau told reporters.
And it also means a strategy of reconciliation for the city and sensitivity training for city workers.
"Definitely I would like to work with police services here in Montreal and I definitely will expand the training to their services," said Bordeleau.
The job was among the promises of the previous Coderre administration.
