Have you ever been stuck in traffic thanks to four detours all leading you to a street that was ultimately closed? If you've met that nightmare, or any others while driving around Montreal there's a new app that the city would like you to download.
It's called MTL Trajet, and was developed with Concordia University as part of the city's Smart and Digital City Action Plan.
Available for Android and iPhone, the app record's the time it takes you to get from point A to B based on your mode of transportation.
The goal is to make your future commute easier by finding the troubled areas now.
The travel survey will ask you for your place of residence, where you work or study, and how you got to where you need to go. The app will also ask you for your occupation and for you to complete a sociodemographic study.
The city said all data is transmitted anonymously.
"Even though it will be available on Montréal's open data portal, the data we collect will remain anonymous and confidential. Integral data about trips and sociodemographic data will only be used for this study and will only be accessible to researchers working on the project."
MTL Trajet was designed to run in the background on your phone, only sending you a notification when you arrive at your destination asking you to fill out a quick survey about your commute.
"The application enables us to study the travel patterns of residents travelling through and around Montréal. We ask for personal information solely to refine our analysis so that the portrait of the situation that we create through the study is as accurate as possible."
If potentially helping your own and many other Montrealers' drive around town is not enough to get you to take part in the survey, the city is pairing the launch of the app with a contest.
If you're over 18 and record at least 25 trips between October 17 and November 17 you will be eligible to win:

One iPad
One of two $250 gift certificates to an outdoor sporting goods store
One of five BIXI memberships
