Richard E. Tremblay has been awarded the 2017 Stockholm Prize in Criminology.
Tremblay is an Emeritus Professor of Pediatrics, Psychiatry and Psychology at Universite de Montreal and the first Canadian to be awarded the prize.
The jury that awarded the Stockholm Prize in Criminology, nicknamed the "Nobel of Criminology", recognized Tremblay's extensive and pioneering work in over 500 publications and mentioned his current research in Dublin where he is testing pre-natal crime prevention with at-risk mothers.
Among research highlighted by the jury is a finding by Tremblay that the peak age for violent behavior is not 20 - but age three.
Tremblay's work also determined the predictors of early and persistent violence can be changed rather than accepted as inevitable.
The prize comes with a cash award of $145,000.
