Montreal police are urging victims of sexual assault to come forward and file a complaint.
The call comes in the wake of alleged sex abuse cases involving high profile personalities.
They've set up a special temporary hotline for people to call: 514-280-2079. It's a direct link to the sexual assault unit and it's in operation Monday to Friday between 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Police said victims can also file a complaint at their local police station. They can also call 911 in case of emergency.
Montreal police spokesperson commander Marie-Claude Dandenault said she understands people may be hesitant to contact them.
"People feel they are victimized and afraid they'll be judged but we will not judge them," said Dandenault in an interview with CJAD 800 News.
Groups who help support sex assault victims say they may see an increase in the number of calls over the next couple of days and weeks.
Rita Acosta, counsellor at the organization Movement against Rape and Incest said they've been getting three or four calls for help a day since the Harvey Weinstein scandal broke.
Acosta said says she's not surprised about the pattern of alleged assaults happening within the entourage of the suspected aggressor.
"Rape and incest, it's within the family, it's within friends, 85% it's people we know," said Acosta.
Dr. Laurie Betito, a psychologist specializing in sexuality and the host of CJAD 800's Passion said it's not surprising victims are stepping forward only now.
"There are just too many stories of people going to bosses or HRs and not being validated," said Betito.
"There's so much sometimes guilt and shame and belief on the victim's part that nothing will be done, that the person has so much power, that they can't possibly fight that level of power or money or what have you."
Acosta said reaching out for help is a good first step.
"If they call, it's because they have the courage to do something about it. And even if they don't want to denounce (their aggressor), they do something about it for themselves and say, 'Yes, this happened to me."
