A Montreal nurse has lost her job because she was out running marathons when she was supposed to be on sick leave, according to a report by The Journal de Montréal.
The newspaper said that Willane Louis was on sick leave with neck and back pain after a car accident in September 2014 but an investigation showed she ran seven races in three years during that time - even doing a half marathon a week after the accident.
After a little searching on the internet, the nurses's boss found Louis' name in several races, her finishing times and even photos of her participation.
Louis even let slip while justifying her absences that she was so sick, she had to cancel running in a marathon in the U.S.
Louis was fired in April of last year. She contested it but lost. An arbitrator ruled that if she could run marathons, she could work under certain conditions.
Sunira Chaudhri, an employment lawyer and partner with Levitt LLP, told the AndrewCarter Show that your life doesn't have to end while you're on sick leave but...
"What does end are any of the things that might exacerbate your disabiity," said Chaudhri.
"You're not living your normal life when you're on sick leave. You're supposed to quietly be trying to get better, not really talking too much about your travel exploits while you're away."
The newspaper reports Louis was also found to have deceived her doctors who knew nothing about her running habit.
