It's been barely a day since the Competition Bureau announced it's investigating possible price fixing of bread at major grocery stores.
And now a Montreal man wants to sue.
Joey Zukran of LPC Avocat which is spearheading the request said they're on behalf of their client James Govan even though nothing's been proven in court.
"At the authorization stage of a class action, what you have to show is there appears to be a case against these companies," said Zukran in an interview with CJAD 800 News.
"The allegations are extremely serious."
And they are arguing that if any allegations are proven, plaintiffs are entitled to damages.
"The prejudice suffered by consumers is the price they would have paid in a fair market free of collusion and free of a cartel basically," said Zukran.
Zukran said this class action would apply across Canada and could be worth millions.
"Almost every single person in Quebec over 18 years old has purchased, just ask anyone around you, `When was the last time you purchased bread?' and they'll say "Well, probably yesterday or probably last week.,' " said Zukran.
"Very, very large class action we're talking about here."
As usual, it would take about a year for the request to be authorized or not and then another year for it to make its way into the courts.
