A Montreal man who was once one of Quebec's most wanted was found guilty of second-degree murder on Tuesday.
Gurpreet Kaur was stabbed to death inside her home in Saint-Laurent on Christmas Eve 2007.
Her husband Harinder Singh Cheema was the main suspect but had fled the country. He was arrested south of the border, where he had been living under an assumed name, by American authorities two years ago.
During the trial Cheema testified in his own defence claiming he was provoked. He told the jury there had been an argument that night and it got so heated Kaur allegedly picked up a knife and tried to stab Cheema. He added this caused him to lose his temper, grab the knife and stab his wife repeatedly.
Cheema then took the couple's two children, at the time aged 18-months and 20-days, to a friend's house before leaving Canada.
