Large trucks with significant blind spots could one day be banned from Montreal streets.
The idea comes from recommendations tabled at city council Monday from a standing committee on transportation and public safety. The commission, which ran last spring, was endorsed by the city's executive committee.
The report, Vision Zéro, includes concepts from places like London, Seattle and New Orleans, where officials have started evaluating heavy trucks and how well the driver can see other vehicles, cyclists or pedestrians without needing mirrors or cameras.
In London heavy trucks that don't meet the improved safety standards will be banned by 2024.
The new strategy echoes a proposal put forth by Ghost Bikes Montreal and Velo Quebec following the death of a 44-year-old cyclist in Montreal North in July.
One of the other ideas being looked into is forcing protective side guards on private contractor trucks, similar to the ones already found on municipal vehicles.
