Thousands of books and other documents have been returned to Montreal public libraries thanks to a brief window where outstanding late fees were waived.
For three weeks in June, the library system offered amnesty to those that returned overdue items.
The library system expected to recover about 600 documents, it managed to recover over 4,300, including 3,674 books, 384 movies, 104 magazines and 76 CDs.
The amnesty was part of a plan to entice back former library users that were staying away from Montreal's 45 public libraries over outstanding late fees.
It looks like the plan worked; the city says during the three-week reprieve from fines, 5342 people that had not been to the library in at least six months renewed their library cards.
