If you had open heart surgery at the Montreal Heart Institute in the past 4 years, expect a letter or phone call from the hospital.
It's advising patients that there's a risk of infection associated with a device used during surgery.
The institute says the risk of infection is 1 per cent or less.
It says heater-cooler systems used in the surgery may have been contaminated with a bacteria when they were being manufactured in Germany.
The Institute says to date only 2 out of more than 8000 patients who had the surgery since 2012 have been diagnosed.
But, it says patients exposed during cardiac surgery may develop symptoms months or years later.
All the devices at the Montreal Heart Institute have been replaced.
