You go to the grocery store to buy your food, well at one Montreal grocer you can buy fruits and vegetables that are grown in-house—or, rather, on the house.
The IGA on Henri Bourassa Blvd. east of Cavendish Blvd. in the Saint-Laurent borough claims to be the first grocery store in Canada to grow organic fruits and vegetables right on its roof.
The rooftop garden covers 2,300 square meters and contains dozens of kinds of crops.
Eight beehives have also been set up, which could yield up to 600 jars of honey for sale.
Customers are now able to buy the locally-grown produce, which is packaged with green branding saying "fresh from the roof."
About 30 varieties of organic fruits and vegetables will be on sale until the end of the growing season when the weather turns colder.
