A motion is expected to be presented Monday at Montreal city council calling for a tax on sugary soft drinks.
Councillor Marvin Rotrand said he and Anjou Mayor Luis Miranda will table it.
"Dozens of countries are actually now on board with the idea of a tax on sugary beverages because the research has made a clear link between the consumption of such products and the illnesses that I numerated. The impact affecting behaviors and getting people to use healthier products is now documented", said Rotrand in an interview with CTV.
Such a motion requires federal approval, which, Rotrand added, would be easier to secure thanks to the countries that already have such a tax.
