Even though it would end up saving you money in the long run, members of the National Assembly will not be getting a pay raise any time soon.
The idea was originally proposed by an independent committee chaired by former Supreme Court judge Claire L’Heureux-Dubé in 2013. The plan would have been to increase wages while eliminating non-taxable annual allowances and controversial severance allowances along with other perks.
With that in mind, the Liberal government tabled Bills 78 and 79 last November, with the goal of ultimately saving $400,000 per year.
According to the Journal de Montreal, even though a pay raise would be cost effective, it won't happen.
The newspaper has learned that the Liberals are now seeing the move as politically costly, with significant backlash from both opposition parties and the public when the bills were first announced.
The party said it will not move forward without a consensus.
