There's mixed but mostly positive reaction to the news that two safe injection sites will be set up near the Gay Village and one in the Hochelaga-Maisonneuve borough.
Sanda works at a non-profit helping unemployed youth right near one of the planned supervised safe injection sites near Spectre de rue, a drug prevention and intervention centre on Ontario Street East. She said it will help keep the streets free of used syringes.
"We sometimes find the people doing the stuff in the parking lot and the people working there (at the non-profit) are very afraid of that," she said.
Some of future neighbours are concerned this will just bring more drug users in the area.
But others such as Theatre Ste Catherine located near the Cactus needle sharing site on Ste Catherine Street E. don't think so. Owner Mark Louch said the safe injection site planned near them is a positive thing.
"Why do they have to do it in the street and in the alleyway, why can't we offer them a clean space where they're able to get the proper treatment? It's going to be healthier for them and for the neighbourhood to have them in a place where there's proper help," said Louch in an interview with CJAD 800 News.
The sites are expected to be up and running by the end of next month.
