McGill University is moving to ban sales of bottled water from its two campuses by next spring.
The Office of Sustainability says the ban will be in effect by May 1, 2019 and means bottled water will no longer be available from on-campus vending machines or restaurants.
But, the university says it will also be installing 25 additional water fountains and some of them will be retrofitted to "make it easier to refill reusable water containers".
School officials say they will also work with organizers of on-campus events to ensure easy access to free and safe drinking water.
The school says safe drinking water is a basic human right and the ban is being initiated to help reduce the production of greenhouse gases and non-recyclable waste.
