Montreal mayor Valérie Plante and her municipal counterparts are expecting big things from next week's provincial budget, especially when it comes to revenue sharing for legal marijuana.
Plante and mayors of the Quebec Union of Municipalities met today in Montreal to discuss common priorities such as public transportation and preparing for the legalization of marijuana.
The mayors said they're concerned that the legalization of marijuana is coming in the next couple of months and they still have no agreement with the province on how to share revenues.
They said they're hoping for a 30% per cent cut - amounting to about $30M annually.
Plante said mayors need to get their fair share.
Plante said they need to know how much they're getting so they can plan for things such as policing.
"We're the ones knowing our territories, we know what the needs are, we know what's best for our citizens," Plante told reporters.
The budget will be tabled next Tuesday.
