Dozens of people gathered along Park Ave. on Friday morning to stage a protest against the province's contentious law requiring people to show their faces while giving or receiving a public service.
On Wednesday, the Quebec Liberals passed Bill 62 — widely seen as an attempt to punish Muslim women who wear face veils, such as the niqab and burka.
The protesters gathered along the 80 bus line wearing some sort of face coverings. Technically, Bill 62 makes it illegal to have your face covered while riding the bus — though many bus services in the province have suggested they wouldn't attempt to enforce the law.
"Our message to the government is we think that this is a ridiculous, manipulative, and cowardly legislative act that as Quebecers we disagree with," said protest organizer Catherine Jezer-Morton. "We also just want to express solidarity with the women that could be affected by it."
At least one bus driver was seen at the wheel with a face mask, in solidarity with the protesters.
