In a statement the BEI says the incident began at around 2:30 AM when police in Lévis tried to pull over a motorist who sped off.
During the chase the man tossed an axe from the window of his vehicle.
Police officers tried to stop him by laying down a spike strip, but it did not work.
The pursuit ended about 20 minutes later on Boulevard Charest near Henri IV when police used their patrol cars to box him in.
The man then reportedly emerged from the car brandishing a machete.
