An investigation is underway into a fire at a government funded seniors home in the SouthWest borough early yesterday that left a 69-year old man in serious condition in hospital.
He suffered burns to 80% of his body when he apparently fell asleep with a cigarette in a designated smoking area of the Yvon Brunet Centre on Newman Boulevard.
The Journal de Montreal says it happened at around 5AM.
The flames were put out by an employee who heard the man's screams.
An official for the home says all residents are assessed as to whether they would be allowed to smoke in the building.
