Montreal first responders were called to Mount Royal early Sunday morning to attempt a rescue of a man in his thirties.
While out for a jog or walk with a female companion, the man apparently lost his footing and then fell down a steep cliff.
Montreal Fire Service spokesperson, Ian Ritchie, said it took police and firefighters about twenty minutes to locate the woman and then another ten minutes to descend to where the man had fallen.
"The circumstances around how he fell or why he fell is unknown, but he fell down about a thirty foot cliff into a little ravene," said Ritchie. "So, when (the woman) called 911 it was hard to find her because she was up on the mountain.|
When rescuers reached the man after their challenging descent they discovered he was suffering from cardiac arrest.
The man was pronounced dead on the scene.
The woman was taken to hospital and treated for shock.
"All the circumstabnces around it and what they were doing there at that time of morning and how he fell are still unknown."
Ritchie said it doesn't look like anything suspicious was at play, "it was just two people walking the mountain and had a very unfortunate accident."
An autopsy is planned on the man's body and a coroner is investigating.
