Ontario's police watchdog says a married couple in their 70s is dead after a police-involved shooting late Friday night at a hospital in Cobourg, about 100 kilometres east of Toronto.
The Special Investigations Unit says it's looking into the circumstances surrounding the death of a 70-year-old man and provincial police are investigating the death of his 76-year-old wife at the Northumberland Hills Hospital.
SIU spokesman Jason Gennaro says the couple was admitted to the hospital emergency room for unspecified ailments, and were side-by-side on gurneys in a triage room.
The SIU says Cobourg police received a call after people heard gunshots coming from inside that room on Friday at about 11 p.m.
Gennaro says when police responded, two officers encountered the room where they found the woman dead with a head wound.
He says the officers discharged their firearms after an interaction with the man, who was hit and pronounced dead at the scene.
Ontario Provincial Police declined to comment on their investigation on Saturday morning.
