A major accident on Highway 30 westbound made the morning drive a nightmare for hundreds of motorists Wednesday.
According to provincial police the driver of a semi-truck was asleep at the wheel as he was approaching a slowdown in traffic just before Harwood, Route 342. He was not able to brake in time and plowed into the traffic in front of him.
A pickup truck and a second vehicle were crushed between the semi and a second one just ahead.
One CJAD 800 listener described the scene to the Andrew Carter Morning show.
"The fact the car involved was a pickup truck is news to me, I would not have recognized it. I just passed it and honestly it looked like a ball of scrap metal," she said. "It was unrecognizable. I didn't know what it was."
Miraculously, police say while the drivers of both vehicles suffered serious injuries, they are expected to survive.
The accident caused traffic to back up on the westbound side of the highway for more than three kilometres.
