Police are warning women using the dating apps Tinder and Badoo to be on the lookout for a man that wants to do more than steal their hearts.
Already about 10 women have told similar stories of meeting a young man through a dating app that tells them he is a student new to Canada, and police believe there are possibly more victims.
"After gaining their confidence, he asked them to [deposit a government cheque] at the bank via an ATM machine and withdraw the money from those cheques [to give him]," Constable Raphael Bergeron explained.
But with a bit of slight of hand—or outright lying—the serial dater and fraudster would never give them a cheque to deposit, usually an empty envelope that he said contained it.
In some cases, he then proceeded to rob the women of their wallets and cellphones.
The scammer always contacted the women with the cell number 438-345-5180.
Police describe their suspect as a white male about 23 or 24 years old of medium build and roughly six-feet-one in height.
He has brown hair, brown eyes and there is a crown tattooed on his right wrist.
Police say he often arrived for dates with stubble on his face and would wear pale jeans with white shoes.
Potential victims and those with any information on the case are being asked to contact police using the anonymous InfoCrime tip line at 514-393-1133.
