The City of Longueuil is considering a major change to its waste collection routine.
La Presse is reporting it's considering cutting back on the frequency of its garbage collection, to once every other week, by 2022. That's when the Quebec government expects municipalities to bring an end to the practice of burying organic household waste.
In the fall of 2017, the city launched a pilot project by distributing some 3,000 brown composting bins to homes and businesses, with the goal of diverting and increasing amount of compostable waste away from landfills. Within the next few month, another 10,000 of the bins are expected to go out.
The idea is to gradually change residents' habits when it comes to setting their garbage out.
