One summer soon you may be able to camp out on the St. Lawrence River just a few minutes from the South Shore.
On Thursday morning, La Presse reported on a plan to develop a narrow strip of land that separates the St. Lawrence river from the St. Lawrence seaway, stretching over 20 kilometres from the Victoria Bridge to Kahnawake.
At present, the land is primarily a cycling path, accessible only by bike or on foot.
But the Montreal Metropolitan Community (MMC), a city planning body, told La Presse there are plans to open it up, either to cars or small vehicles like golf carts, allowing the public to get up and down the long strip of land.
It would effectively be converted into a park, open to activities such as fishing, paddleboarding, and bird watching.
Beaches would be added, including one beneath the new Champlain Bridge.
The MMC also mentioned the possibility of adding campsites alongside the river, something which has already been implemented in one section, the "Récréoparc" near the suburb of Sainte-Catherine.
Entomologist and founder of the Montreal Insectarium Georges Brossard is reportedly a major advocate for the plan, and is pushing for it to move forward.
But don't pack your tent or fishing gear right now - the park is still in the first planning stages, and won't be coming to fruition this summer.
