More than 500 people have signed a petition calling on the provincial government to enact legislation that would restrict a young person's access to pornographic websites.
Liberal MNA Rita de Santis tabled a petition with 509 signatures in the National Assembly on Thursday which calls on the government to require porn site operators to carry out age verification before allowing a user to access the material.
The author of the petition contends that 90% of boys and 60% of girls have visited pornography websites before the age of 18.
La Presse reports that the average age at which boys discover porn is 12 and the petitioners consider open-access to pornographic websites a public health issue.
The matter is now before a National Assembly committee which will decide on further action.
The United Kingdom has passed legislation which will take effect this year requiring age verification to access pornographic websites.
