Premier François Legault says the election of Jason Kenney's United Conservative Party won't change the province's stance on new pipelines.
After Kenney's victory over premier Rachel Notley's NDP was confirmed Tuesday night, Kenney spoke a few words in French, calling on Quebec to help Alberta develop its natural resources and economy — essentially, by allowing a pipeline to run through Quebec to reach Atlantic Canada.
But in response, Legault rejected the plea.
"We're open to a [natural] gas pipeline coming from Alberta," the premier told reporters at the National Assembly on Wednesday, "but right now, honestly...and its unanimous, all parties have the same position, there's no social acceptability for an additional oil pipeline."
Back in December, Legault suggested he wasn't interested in what he called Alberta's 'dirty energy' — a phrase which wasn't well received by western politicians and oil producers.
Legault and Kenney are expected to have a phone exchange sometime on Wednesday.
