In an interview that aired this weekend on French-langauge broadcaster TVA Nouvelles, Premier François Legault expressed hope that Quebec might become more independent than it is now.
He made the remark when speaking to anchor Pierre Bruneau about Quebec's reliance on federal transfer payments.
"If we want to become independent, in a broad sense of the word, we need to create wealth in Quebec," Legault said. "We will not be in a good position as long as we are poorer than the rest of Canada."
Once a PQ cabinet minister, Legault left the sovereignty movement earlier this decade when he created the CAQ. The Premier has previously said that his government will never hold a referendum on independence.
