The Legault government says it's open to committing public funds for the return of Major League Baseball to Montreal — provided the plans are financially viable.
Chantal Rouleau, the minister responsible for the Montreal region, said Wednesday that a new baseball stadium can be "interesting" for the economic and social development the area where the park is located.
Reports suggest the prospective ownership group headed by businessman Stephen Bronfman have already settled on a site for a new park — the Peel Basin in Pointe St. Charles. The land upon which they hope to build a new park is currently owned by the Canada Lands Corporation.
The report went on to state that Bronfman and Pierre Boivin, the head of Bronfman's investment arm Claridge, recently added their names Quebec's lobbyists' registry in the hopes of getting government support in their efforts to convince the federal government to sell them the land.
Meanwhile, the MNA for the riding that takes in Peel Basin, Liberal Dominique Anglade, suggests several things need to be considered before plopping a shiny new ballpark in the Point — particularly, the effect it would have on the low-income neighborhood.
