There was a standoff at the Lacolle border crossing during opposing immigration rallies as riot police stood guard keeping the two sides away from each other.
As a result, traffic into Canada was rerouted for a few hours, but the normal crossing resumed around 3:30 Saturday afternoon.
The Canada Border Services Agency said vehicles were redirected to adjacent ports of entry, including Hemmingford and routes 221 and 223 in Lacolle.
The rallies took place near a migrant camp with roughly 200 members of Storm Alliance trading insults across a police line with a group of pro-refugee protesters.
CTV's Kelly Greig reported it could have been worse.
"There was a brief skirmish... 2 protesters came together and were immediately separated by police and, of course, everyone started to yell and panic and wonder what's going on, that was really what brought in the police at that point and since then there hasn't been anything but yelling back and forth between the 2 groups", said Greig.
Other gatherings were planned in Ontario, Alberta, New Brunswick and British Columbia.
