If you've ever arrived at an airport only to find your bags are somewhere else, you already know how frustrating the situation can be.
But what if you found out later that your bags were just piled up in an area of the airport where anyone could just go take them, or put something in them?
On Saturday Lachine resident Kyle Rougeau landed in Montreal from Saskatoon, via Toronto. Some not so cooperative weather caused his flight to be delayed. While he eventually got home, his bags did not.
Rougeau spoke with an Air Canada agent who told him the bags were left behind due to the storm, and would arrive later in the day or at the latest the next morning.
After checking the tracking number given to him online and having no luck finding his bags, he called Air Canada again before ultimately going back to the airport.
While walking around Rougeau said he saw a large pile, with hundreds of bags were left unmonitored near the domestic baggage claim. He was then able to search through the bags without anyone in the airport making a fuss.
"I walked behind the security," Rougeau told CTV Montreal. "No one talked to me."
The good news for Rougeau, he found his bag. The downside of the experience was discovering a potential security flaw at Montreal's Trudeau International Airport.
"This is a completely wide open area that anyone can go into and anyone could take bags or add things to bags," he said. "I think this could be a huge security risk."
In a statement, Air Canada said this was an isolated situation due to the bad weather in Toronto. The airline said the bags were moved to an area of the airport and monitored.
Kim Porter was also at the airport on Sunday to pick up a family member.
"There were some very expensive items hanging out, like golf clubs and sports equipment," Porter said. "I kept thinking to myself, 'I'd be really angry if that were my golf clubs sitting in the middle of the domestic area unattended.’”
After finding his bags Rougeau spoke with Air Canada agents about the luggage piles. He said the agents told him the heaps of lost baggage have been happening every day this summer.
Rougeau has filed a complaint with Air Canada but has yet to hear back.
