The City of Montreal was in appeals court today trying to end the suspension of its bylaw banning pit bull-type dogs.
Three justices of the Court of Appeal of Quebec said they will deliberate on the matter before rendering a written decision soon.
Last month, a judge suspended several provisions of the city's animal control bylaw pending the outcome of a legal challenge by the local SPCA.
The bylaw bans all new pit bull-type dogs on city territory and places strict restrictions on those animals currently owned by citizens.
The judge ruled that the law was hastily written and vague.
Lawyers for Montreal argued today that the initial suspension order shouldn't have lasted more than 10 days and the urgency with which the case was heard prevented the city from adequately defending its position.
