Fruit and vegetable importers say heavy rains which fell in California in January and February are behind the super high prices for lettuce in the Montreal-area.
California farmers were unable to get their crops started until late in the season and as a result there are shortages of all types of lettuce.
Local importers tell the Journal de Montreal they are trying to bring in product from Florida, Mexico and Spain but there isn't enough available to make up for the shortfall.
The price of iceberg, romaine and curly lettuce has reached as high as $5 a head and in many instances shortages have resulted in empty shelves.
Prices are expected to come down in the coming weeks.
