Quebec's lawmakers have put a decisive end to the practice of police officers wearing camouflage pants during protests.
On Thursday, the National Assembly passed Bill 133, which essentially makes the wearing of police officers' regulation uniforms mandatory while on duty.
It passed by a vote of 99 to 4. Among the no votes were all three of Québec Solidaire's MNAs.
The law was initially tabled by public security minister Martin Coiteux in response to the police protests of recent years. The protests against changes to police pensions saw officers across the province ditch their regular duds for all kinds of alternatives, most notably, colorful camouflage pants and red ballcaps.
Meanwhile, the law also forbids moonlighting by officers — something which became an issue on the night of March 14, when a major snowstorm left hundreds of motorists stranded on Highway 13 for several hours.
The SQ officer in charge of operations on the highway was working his second job that night, as a real estate agent.
